…manifestation and the Law of Attraction can inspire personal agency and an optimistic view of life at best, and foster an illusion of absolute control and omnipotence at worst.
In my years as a psychotherapist, I worked with many people who identified as ‘spiritual’, and through that work, was confronted with many aspects of these belief systems that often became a hindrance to the therapeutic work. I don’t remember how many times people expressed fear that feeling challenging (so-called negative) emotions would attract more negative experiences into their lives. Likewise, I’ve witnessed so much self-blame and guilt when the sole explanation for someone not getting what they wanted being that they didn’t believe it strong enough…
At the same time, I don’t feel that dismissing these approaches altogether as ‘magical thinking’ is helpful either. One, because I do believe in magick (in many different ways) and want to live a magical life, and two, because there are elements that are truly valuable in them that we miss if we rush to throw the baby out with the bathwater. After all, there’s a reason that manifestation has attracted so many!
Rather than discarded, i believe manifestation needs to be reimagined -through a psychospiritual, grounded and magical, perspective; a perspective of Soul.
